Before the First Class...

A: Your best piece of creative work before coming to this course

This sculpture was from my HSC Visual Arts Body of Work. Titled "CAGED IN", I attempted to represent my fear of birds through a series of headwear-type sculptures and photographs. The interesting thing is that the final sculpture you see here is very different from what I previously intended (the shape of the cage, the feathers, the geometric pattern on the bird's wings) due to both circumstance and development of new ideas and concept. It made me realise that developing an idea rather than sticking to your initial plan concludes in a far more substantial product.

B: An image of a great piece of architecture

I am personally in love with Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, especially the big entrance and the stairs because it feels like you are entering/ exiting something very important. The positioning of the building at an intersection, allowing the face of the building to be unconventionally diagonal in relation to the surrounding buildings is very interesting and makes it stand out. The bold colours also make the building stand out from its neighbours.

C: An original photograph of something beautiful

I took this photo at the "southern-most tip of mainland Asia" in Johor, Malaysia. The pier was shaded until this point, where the sun and heat made it impossible to continue. But I'm glad I didn't because I took this photo and only later did I realise that the posts perfectly matched the line of the skyline! I really love the lighting and muted colour palette, as it creates a cool atmosphere (completely opposite the real weather), and I love how the pier seems to reach the other side of the ocean.
